Hazel tilted her head back and watched the sparks drift down from the tower’s glowing peak. The whole valley was beginning to look as though someone had scattered tiny lights across the grass.
She thought about Theo, her brother, and how much he would love to run through a field full of glowing flowers. She thought about Mabel, her best friend, who always wanted to know what was over the next hill. And she thought about Waffles, her dog at home, who would probably sit very still in the middle of all the flowers and look as if he had planned the whole thing himself, just like Dot.
The thought made her smile.
